Welcome to the course blog for Anthropology 2118.
The course blog as assignment
A central part of this course will be writing about what you see and experience through an online group blog, Revolutionary Cities, which is online at https://revolutionarycities.blog. The blog will be a public record of our shared encounter with urban revolutions in these two cities.
Most blog posts will introduce a place, experience, or movement through tangible evidence you experience in Paris, Marseille, or Barcelona. You may also write a blog post to reflect on how you experienced a reading or film. Stay tuned for some prompts asking you to blog about topics raised in class.
Class notes from the teaching team
At various points during the semester, the professor and teaching assistants may share background information, ideas, and additional readings and media relevant to course content here on the blog as Class Notes. This is not extra required reading, but may add to your experience of the course.
Resources for Writing
Three useful resources on writing for this blog, although their advice doesn’t always agree, are:
- “The 12 Dos and Don’ts of Writing a Blog” by Brian Klems.
- Writing prompts for describing a room (or other space) and a person, and advice for presenting a story from Kirin Narayan’s Alive in the Writing.
- The response paper section (p. 21-24) of “A Student’s Guide to Reading and Writing in Social Anthropology” by the Harvard Anthropology Department.
